Devín Castle occupies a limestone promontory where the Morava River joins the Danube, a geological convergence that has drawn settlement since the Neolithic. The earliest fortifications date to the Great Moravian Empire of the ninth century, when the site commanded trade routes between the Byzantine and Frankish spheres.
